ABOUT THE PLAY:

In the year 1862, Victor Hugo had written a classic called LES MISÉRABLES, which highlighted a story about survival of the human spirit, using 19th century France as a backdrop. The musical draws its inspiration from the book itself. During the 19th century, which was also the time of the French Revolution, the working class was treated unfairly. They were not given suitable living conditions and were also exempted from laws that were the privilege of the upper classes. The play spans over a period of 30 years and it tells us about the struggles to cope in this hostile environment.

Les Misérables, the musical is written by the talented Alain Boubil while the music, lyrics, and direction is by Claude Michel, Herbet Kretzmer, and Trevor Nunn respectively, where they have done an amazing job. The music & lyrics have earned rave reviews and the direction has also earned numerous accolades. This musical was first staged at the Barbican Theatre in October 1985, but the Queen’s Theatre was thought to be a better venue, which is why it was shifted there in the year 2004.
